Sweet, Sour and Spicy – Chilli Lime Meatballs

These meatballs are the ultimate comfort dish saved only by the fact that they are completely made from scratch. No store bought sweet chilli sauce here.  This chilli lime sauce is so easy and so damned delicious you will wonder why you don’t make it all the time.  They are sweet, spicy and zesty all at once which is just what you need for a real comfort meal. It is lip smacking goodness!  These Chilli Lime Meatballs are worth having in your rotation for when you need a punchy meal with big flavours and that is relatively easy to put together.

And yet I am going to say very little about this recipe other than that you need to have it in your repertoire because it is just so delectable.  Instead I want to give a big shout out to my friends at Two Fish and Me who gifted me the gorgeous tea towel that we used to shoot the post image.  A local family run business selling all sorts of homewares like terrarium kits, beautiful table ware and greeting cards, Two Fish and Me is a sustainable business designing and making their table ware in Australia.  The tea towel in the image is a cotton / linen blend and is just the most beautiful quality.  The designs are inspired by nature and I can’t recommend their products enough.  Perfect for Mother’s Day! Chilli Lime Meatballs

A spicy, delightful meal made from scratch will all good ingredients.

  • 1 kg chicken or pork mince
  • 1 clove garlic chopped
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 2 eggs beaten

Chilli Lime Sauce

  • 8 long red chillis sliced
  • 6 cloves garlic
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger grated
  • 200 ml water
  • 150 g white sugar
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tbsp fish sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 dsp cornflour mixed with a little water
  • 1 lime juice and zest



  1. Set oven to 200°C. Combine garlic, paprika and egg with chicken or pork mince and form into golf ball sized meatballs. Place in a deep oven dish and bake in oven for 15 minutes until lightly browned.

Chilli Lime Meatballs

  1. Blitz the chillis and garlic in a food processor until roughly chopped.

  2. Combine water, sugar, vinegar, fish sauce and salt in a small saucepan over a medium heat until sugar dissolves. Add the chilli and garlic mixture and the ginger and stir over heat for around 10 minutes. Add the zest and juice of the lime.

  3. Add the cornflour mixture and stir until sauce coats the back of a spoon. Take off heat and test for seasoning.

  4. Pour sauce over partly cooked meatballs and continue to cook for half an hour until sauce is bubbling and meatballs are well browned.

  5. Serve with fluffy white rice for the ultimate comfort kick.
