Cherry and Apple Crumble

Cherry and Apple Crumble

This may be the dessert you have been waiting for!

Cherry and Apple Crumble is one of those desserts that ticks all boxes. Easy to prepare, includes surprisingly little sugar (by comparison with other desserts) and it is delicious! It is your perfect Autumn/Winter dessert that you will want to make and serve again and again. It brought smiles all around in my house and I can’t wait to share it with friends and family.

I have said before of my cakes that if they have fruit in them they have to be good for you. Right? Yes, that’s right. You are getting all the goodness from the fruit so that is a real bonus. Cherries are delightful and packed with benefits. They are full of anti oxidants and anti inflammatory properties. They are beneficial for heart health and can even aid in getting a good nights sleep. And apples – as equally full of goodness. But the benefits don’t end with the fruit. The crumble topping includes a generous amount of rolled oats which are also great for heart health and supporting healthy cholesterol levels. It also includes coconut which is not only great for flavour but is also good for bone health and has a high mineral content.

So I think you can feel really good about serving this dessert to family and friends. It has the natural sweetness of the fruit and only requires 1/3 cup of sugar in the topping which is far less than most traditional desserts. Yet it is a sweet dessert so you won’t feel deprived if you have a sweet tooth (like I do).

I like to serve Cherry and Apple Crumble with natural Greek yoghurt for a probiotic boost. But cream is lovely too or even coconut yoghurt. And this crumble is easy peasey to put together. You simply prepare the crumble mixture, lightly cook the apple and cherries (I use frozen for year round enjoyment) and top with the crumble. Then it is in the oven for the topping to brown and the filling to bubble up. If you have a fast oven you may need to cover the crumble with foil half way through to stop it catching.

My only advice for the Cherry and Apple Crumble is – enjoy it!

Ingredients

  • 3 large red eating apples peeled, cored and sliced
  • 500 g pitted cherries frozen is fine
  • 1 cup self raising flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup dessicated coconut
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 100 g melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Place the apple in a small saucepan with enough water to come about half way up the amoung of the apple (not covering the apple). Simmer gently until apple is starting to soften. Then add the frozen pitted cherries and cook until they are just soft.

  2. While the apple is cooking combine the dry ingredients and mix in the butter to form the crumb for the topping.

  3. Turn the apple and cherries into the bottom of a 24 cm round pie dish. Top with the crumble topping and bake until golden and bubbling. Cover the crumble after 10 minutes or so to prevent it from catching.

  4. Serve warm with yoghurt, double cream or coconut yoghurt.
